WP 1-7 Malnutrition in older persons

Malnutrition in older persons of the general population and in subgroups of different health and living situations - joined analysis of KORA-AGE and Nuremberg databases

Malnutrition is widespread in the older population, whereat geriatric patients and nursing home residents are more often affected than community dwelling older adults. Independent of the setting, a large proportion of older people is at risk of malnutrition. It is assumed that risk profiles for the development of malnutrition differ in older adults in different health and living situations. Currently, studies including samples of different functional levels (independent, dependent) and different living situations and, moreover, using similar methods, are scarce.

Data sets on older adults in different health and living situations, which are available from the project partners, will be jointly analyzed. Both, cross-sectional and longitudinal data will be analyzed.

Objectives:

  1. Assessing and comparing the prevalence of malnutrition, risk of malnutrition and functional status in older subjects in different health- and living situations (community, hospital, nursing home)
  2. Identifying high risk groups for the development of malnutrition and functional decline
  3. Investigating the association between (mal)nutrition, deterioration of health and development of frailty in community-dwelling older people based on longitudinal data.
