Reward elicited by food (FA7 module 2)
In functional MRI studies we usually find magnetic field inhomogeneities limit the sequences’ signal in the brain areas adjacent to the frontal brain, nose and ears. Therefore, it is difficult to depict brain activation in areas related to olfactory and gustatory perception.
In this project we aim to test novel functional imaging sequences with regard to their ability to depict brain activation in reaction to olfactory-gustatory perception. We will use a combination of olfactory-gustatory stimulation and visual input.
Our second goal is to provide project module 2 of FA 6 with functional imaging correlates of the participants’ reaction towards tempting food aromas. Therefore, especially the reaction of the reward system will be monitored and extracted. The data is used to inform the participants how their physical reaction belongs to their self-description. This information is thought to evoke a learning process leading to more self-awareness in the participants and therefore fostering a healthier eating behavior.
- Induction of learning processes with regard to a healthy food choice: Does brain activation in reward areas triggered by food stimuli relate to self-perception of the subjects measured in FA6 module 2? Does this information influence food consumption in a positive way?
- Test of novel MRI sequences for their ability to depict brain activation in reaction to olfactory-gustatory perception
