enable human study centers Freising & Nuremberg (FA 1)
In the first phase of enable the two study centers in Freising and Nuremberg were established. Four human cohorts were recruited and phenotyped during the 1st funding period (FP1). The four cohorts represent four age groups with age-specific nutrition-related health risks. All four cohorts were studied in a highly standardized manner using a variety of state-of-the-art technologies and involving several research groups of the enable cluster. Many volunteers were already involved in intervention studies during FP1. This core project serves the operation of the human study platform for the enable cluster. In addition to the research questions answered in FP1, the comprehensive dataset and the biosamples available will be used for addressing additional research questions and for developing new concepts for a better tailored and age group-specific nutrition. A specific task for the second funding periond (FP2) of enable will be to compare the large datasets on metabolic features, sensorics and food preferences across the four defined age groups and, thereby, across the lifespan. In particular, metabolic parameters will be used for additional analyses to define specific metabotypes. The cohorts will be also invited to act as volunteers in FP2. In particular, the cohorts of “middle-agers” and “elderly” will serve as study populations for the continued clinical research program described in the respective focus areas. In addition, it is planned to open the human study centre for external collaborations with food companies and food start-ups to develop and/or test new food products in a highly standardized manner.
Our objectives
- Evaluation of multidimensional data sets from the first funding period.
- Maintainance and placing the the four cohorts at the disposal for research questions of other focus areas.
- Conduct of intervension studies with innovative foods in the established study centers.
