This focus area is dedicated to the problem of malnutrition and dehydration in older people and will focus on the growing health care setting of nursing homes. It will build on results and developments from subprojects with older persons in enable (first funding periode). In this focus area, malnutrition risk profiles of nursing home residents were characterized, and several strategies to increase energy, protein and fluid intake (i.e., a protein drink, sweet and savoury protein cream, texture-modified and reshaped meals, a smart drinking coaster and motivation games) were developed.
These strategies were merged to an individualized multimodal nutritional care concept which was tested in a multicentre intervention study. In parallel, protein products and IT tools were further developed and optimized towards technically and financially viable solutions that integrate smoothly into the infrastructure and work processes of today’s nursing homes.
