This focus area is dedicated to the problem of malnutrition and dehydration in older people and will focus on the growing health care setting of nursing homes. It will build on results and developments from subprojects with older persons in enable (first funding periode). In this focus area, malnutrition risk profiles of nursing home residents were characterized, and several strategies to increase energy, protein and fluid intake (i.e., a protein drink, texture-modified, enriched and reshaped meals, a smart drinking cup and motivation games) were developed.
Those strategies will be merged to comprise an individualized multimodal nutritional care concept which will be tested in a multicentre intervention study. In parallel, protein products and IT tools will be further developed and optimized towards technically and financially viable solutions that integrate smoothly into the infrastructure and work processes, which actually exist in today’s nursing homes.
